Washington Office of Insurance Commissioner Changes Prelicense Insurance Requirements
Education changes for Washington Insurance Prelicense effective July 1, 2009

ProSchools Approved to Begin Offering Online Washington Insurance Prelicense Courses

Effective July 1, 2009, the state of Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner ( OIC) is making significant changes to the prelicense education mandates and rules. The required number of hours for prelicense education is changing for all major lines of authority (types of licenses). Life, Disability (health), Property and Casualty prelicense applicants will be required to do 20 hours per line, including the rules and statutes material.

Prior to this change, life and disability producers needed 16 hours per line (32 hours total) PLUS an additional 4 hours for rules and statutes, and this applied to P&C prelicense candidates as well. ProSchools, a leader in online insurance education, has developed the Washington Insurance prelicense courses designed to meet the new hour requirements for Washington insurance producers.

In addition to the hour changes per authority, the state of Washington OIC will also no longer require a waiver to complete online education. Students will now have the option to take online or live classes in order to fulfill their prelicense education. ProSchools has been granted permission to offer the online programs as of June 15, 2009. Anyone who begins the online program prior to July 1, 2009 must wait until after July 1, 2009 to take their state exam.

"ProSchools is excited to be one of the first to get approval and be able to offer the new online courses," says Gary Sternberg, lead insurance instructor for ProSchools. Although ProSchools has gained approval, please note that licensees will not be able to purchase the course until 6/15/2009 and they will not be able to test for the new version until 7/1/2009.
