How long does it take to get certified as a mortgage officer?
It’s up to you how quickly you’re able to complete the coursework and pass the state exam.
What are the education and testing requirements?
You’re required by Utah law to complete 20 hours of approved education and pass an exam. The 100 question exam covers state and federal laws and rules relating to mortgage lending. ProSchools does not currently offer the Utah Mortgage Lending courses. For information on approved providers, visit the Utah Division of Real Estate.
Who must license ?
According to Utah law, a license is required for any individual or company (whether physically located in Utah or not) that transacts the “business of residential mortgage loans” in Utah. Additionally, branch offices of mortgage companies must register with the Division.
How do I obtain a Utah Mortgage license while licensed in another state?
Utah does not currently have reciprocity agreements with any states. However, Utah law allows an individual to obtain a mortgage officer license through reciprocity by satisfying several requirements. Click here for more information.
What is the Utah Division of Real Estate?
The Division of Real Estate provides public protection in the real estate marketplace through the education and licensure of real estate brokers, sales agents, appraisers, and the licensure of mortgage lenders. The Division is also responsible for the registration of subdivisions, timeshare developments and camp resort memberships and persons selling timeshares and camp resorts.
Do I need a college degree to become a mortgage broker?

Should I get any additional books on the subject?
Sure, reading as much as you can about succeeding as a new mortgage broker is a wise strategy. ProSchools offers an array of books in our online bookstore.
What are the continuing education and testing requirements?
Mortgage licensees must complete fourteen (14) hours of certified continuing education every renewal cycle, including 3 hours of Utah and/or Federal regulations and 2 hours of ethics. Licenses are valid for a two-year period and must be renewed no sooner than six weeks prior to and an no later than the expiration date. The expiration date is printed on the license and can also be found on the Division's Licensee Database. ProSchools does not currently offer the Utah Mortgage Lending courses. Can I carry over continuing education hours from one renewal
to the next?
No. Course credits earned during one 2 year licensing period may not be carried over to the next licensing period.
