Utah Mortgage Broker License Renewal & Continuing Education: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the continuing education and testing requirements?
Mortgage licensees must complete fourteen (14) hours of certified continuing education every renewal cycle, including 3 hours of Utah and/or Federal regulations and 2 hours of ethics. Licenses are valid for a two-year period and must be renewed no sooner than six weeks prior to and and no later than the expiration date. The expiration date is printed on the license and can also be found on the Division's Licensee Database. ProSchools does not currently offer the Utah Mortgage Lending courses. For information on approved providers, visit the Utah Division of Real Estate.

During what time period must I take the CE courses for them to count toward the required total hours?
You must take your CE courses during the two years preceding the expiration date of your license.

How do I renew my Mortgage license?
To renew a license an individual must:

  • Renew online using your license number, social security number, debit or credit card , and Internet Renewal ID (provided on your Notice of License Renewal)
  • If unable to renew online you must submit to the Division a completed and signed License Renewal Form, copies of education certificates totaling 14 hours, and a $139 non-refundable fee.

What type of courses must I take?
You must complete 14 hours of approved continuing education, including 2 hours of Ethics and 3 hours of Utah and/or Federal regulations.

I have a Utah loan originator/loan solicitor license; however; I am not a Utah resident. Do I have to meet the CE requirement or pass the CE Test Out exam to have my license renewed?
Yes.

Does Utah have CE reciprocity?
At this time, Utah does not have reciprocity with other states.

Can I carry over continuing education hours from one renewal cycle
to the next?

No. Course credits earned during one 2 year licensing period may not be carried over to the next licensing period.

What happens if I don’t complete my continuing education requirement?
Renewal requirements must be completed prior to renewing your license. If your license expires, you cannot work until the license is reinstated. Your application is subject to audit for compliance with all renewal requirements.

Is continuing education required if I am renewing my license as inactive?
Continuing education is not required if renewing as inactive but you must submit a change card. Later changing to active status requires proof of 14 hours of continuing education.

Can I reinstate my license after it has expired?
You can reinstate a license if it has not been expired more than six months. Click here for details on how to reinstate a license expired less than six months. Licenses expired more than six months are not eligible for reinstatement and Utah law requires that licensees reapply as a new applicant. Click here for licensing requirements.
