Mortgage loan originators help consumers obtain mortgage funding or refinancing arrangements. Loan originators guide clients through the loan application process, and provide information about different loan options and credit terms available. To qualify for the initial certification, the Oregon Department of Financial and Consumer Services requires prospective loan originators to complete a 20-hour course of study. This course covers federal lending laws, including the federal laws associated with Equal Credit Opportunity, Fair Housing, the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act (RESPA), Truth in Lending, and Truth in Advertising.
