What is an Insurance Producer?
An insurance producer is an individual who has an agency contract or agreement with an insurance company to solicit or negotiate a policy of insurance on the insurance company's behalf.

Who needs to be licensed as a producer?
Any person who acts or holds himself or herself out to be an insurance producer and every member of a partnership and every officer, director, stockholder, and employee of a corporation who personally engages in the selling, solicitation, or negotiation of policies of insurance must be licensed.

Do I have to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to get licensed?
Effective July 1, 2008, anyone taking a Tennessee Insurance examination must be fingerprinted. Requests for a fingerprint-based background check must be submitted through the use of the Tennessee Applicant Processing Service. Fingerprint information can be found at the Insurance Division website.

What if I have a criminal background?
Any applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, or who has criminal proceedings currently pending should file an application directly with the Department of Commerce and Insurance and receive approval before completing the required prelicensing education.

How do I schedule my examination?
To schedule an exam date and time, you can call them toll-free at (800) 274-4957 or visit www.pearsonvue.com. You are encouraged to reserve your exam date at least three or four business days prior.

When can I begin selling insurance?
You will be issued a license by the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance once you have passed the examination and the Department is satisfied that you have met all other licensing requirements. If you are issued a license, you can not engage in the business of insurance until you are contracted by an insurer.

What are the licensing procedures for nonresidents, limited insurance producers and applicants exempt from written examinations?
The licensing procedures are available on the Department of Commerce and Insurance website.

Are there additional requirements to sell Long Term Care Partnership policies in Tennessee?
Yes. Insurance producers must successfully complete training that has been approved by the Department of Commerce and Insurance. Previously licensed producers may continue to sell long term care products, but must complete a one-time training course by or before June 30, 2009 and ongoing training every 24 months thereafter. Those not licensed as of July 1, 2008 must obtain the initial course before beginning to sell long term care products. The one-time course must be no less than 8 hours and the ongoing training must be no less than 4 hours. Visit the Department of Commerce and Insurance website for more information on Long Term Care requirements.

What are the continuing education requirements to maintain an insurance producer license?
Anyone seeking renewal of a license must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years following the date of issuance of the original license. Of those 24 hours, 3 hours must be in ethics. Continuing education courses may only be repeated and submitted for credit after 3 years.
