Oregon Insurance License Renewal & Continuing Education: Frequently Asked Questions

What are continuing education requirements for renewing my Oregon insurance license?
Licensing Period: Effective January 1, 2008, the renewal date for all resident licensees is changing to the "birthday renewal" rule. All resident licensees will now renew in the month of their birthday instead of the last day of the month you passed your licensing exam. This will not result in a shortened licensing period, it can only lengthen your current licensing period. For more information on this important new change to Oregon Insurance Continuing Education requirements please visit our blog.

Continuing Education hours: Effective January 1, 2008, all licensees will only have to complete 24 hours of continuing education no matter how long you have been licensed. For more information on this important new change to Oregon Insurance Continuing Education requirements please visit our blog.

Ethics Requirement: Effective January 1, 2008, the Ethics requirement will be changed from a 2-hour minimum to a 3-hour minimum. ProSchools Ethics course is already a 3-hour course. What are the requirements in Oregon to sell Long Term Care?
Oregon has joined the ranks of a growing number of states that are mandating certain educational requirements for all producers selling Long Term Care (LTC) insurance. Effective January 31, 2008, all life and health insurance producers that wish to sell or continue selling LTC insurance coverage must complete a one-time Long Term Care training course consisting of no less than eight hours of training, and complete a minimum of a four-hour "refresher" course every two years thereafter. The initial certification course must be completed no later than January 31, 2008. For additional information on this change please click on the following links:

How do I receive a certificate of completion?
ProSchools guarantees we’ll issue your certificate of completion within 24 hours of receiving your final exam. Walk in, take, and pass your final exam at ProSchools and you’ll receive your certificate on the spot. Attending a live class? Your certificate will be handed to you at the end of the class session.

What’s a passing score on a final exam?
70% or better.

How do I find a proctor to monitor my final exam?
In Oregon, your final exam needs to be "proctored." After receiving it in a sealed envelope, you take your exam under the supervision of any employee at a ProSchools location, or with a CPA, attorney, librarian, or college representative monitoring your exam. A list of approved proctors is available at www.cbs.state.or.us.

What happens if I fail my final exam?
If you fail to pass the final for a ProSchools CE course, an alternate final exam will be issued until you do pass.

Is anyone exempt from the CE requirement?
Yes. An agent who meets ALL of the following criteria is exempt from having to fulfill the CE requirement at license renewal: over 58 years old, retired, authorized to transact life insurance only, ten years’ experience as an insurance agent, servicing existing insurance policies only, requests the exemption by submitting application form #440-3154 to the Oregon Insurance Division.
