New York Insurance License Renewal & Continuing Education: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the continuing education requirements for renewing my New York insurance license?
All licensed agents, brokers, consultants and public adjusters must complete 15 credit hours, approved for the class of license held, every two years to renew.

How do I know if a course has been approved by the Department and for which type of license class?
Advertisements used by providers must show the approval information, including the class(es) of license for which the course is approved as well as its expiration date. Approval information for self-study courses can be found on the provider's website.

Are there any exemptions from continuing education requirements?
There is an exemption from CE requirements for licensees currently serving active military duty.

Can the credits earned for a successful completion of a course be applied to more than one license?
Yes. During the same licensing perios, a licensee may use accumulated CE credits to meet the requirements of similiar classes of licenses.

Are there any courses approved to be applicable to all classes of licenses?
Yes. The Department has approved courses applicable to all license classes. These courses are called "bridge" courses and may be used to renew the Life classes as well as Property/Casualty classes.

Can I get credit for a CE course I took in a previous licensing period?
Yes. The Department has approved courses applicable to all license classes. These courses are called "bridge" courses and may be used to renew the Life classes as well as Property/Casualty classes.

Can I carry over extra CE credit hours?
No. The carryover of excess credits from one licensing to the next licensing period is not permitted.

Does New York have continuing education reciprocity for a non-resident licensee?
Yes. The Department will accept a Letter of Certification from a non-resident licensees home state indicating that you are in good standing and in compliance with the requirements of that state, including CE requirements.

What happens if don't comply with CE requirements?
Department disciplinary actions may include a fine of up to $2500, license suspension, or license revocation.
