Meet Colorado Insurance License Requirements & Pass The State Exam with ProSchools

Colorado Insurance License Requirements
To obtain an insurance license in Colorado, you must satisfy these requirements:

  1. You must be a resident of the state of Colorado
  2. You must be at least 18 years of age
  3. You must be trustworthy, competent, financially responsible, and of good personal and business reputation
  4. Mandatory disclosure of all insurance licenses that have been previously revoked, denied, or suspended. Include a written explanation.
  5. Complete the education requirements for the line of authority you are applying for. The Minimum Training Requirements for Insurance Producer Licensure are:

    Course Hours
    Principles of Insurance 3
    Legal Concepts and Regulations 4
    Ethics 3
    Property Insurance 20
    Casualty Insurance 20
    Life Insurance 40
    Health Insurance 40

    You only need to complete the required hours for Principles of Insurance, Legal Concepts and Regulations, and Ethics once if applying for more than one line of authority.
  6. Pass the Colorado insurance license exam administered by Pearson VUE. If you were previously licensed in another state within the past 12 months of the expiration date of your previous license you are exempt from the examination, with a letter of clearance..
  7. Show proof of legal residency in the United States.
  8. Submit an electronic application. The licensing application can be accessed at www.sircon.com/colorado. You will be notified by mail of any outstanding requirements.

Colorado Insurance License Requirements for New Residents
Previously Licensed

Under Colorado law, if you previously held a like license in a former state of residence within 90 days prior to application for licensure in Colorado you may apply for licensure without taking an examination.

You must submit to the Division of Insurance/Pearson Vue:

  1. An electronic application. The licensing application can be accessed at www.sircon.com/colorado. You will be notified by mail of any outstanding requirements
  2. An original signed and/or sealed letter of clearance issued by the state you were previously licensed. The Clearance Letter must state that you held, within the previous 90 days from the expiration/cancellation date of the authority; a license for the same license authority or authorities for which you are now applying for, the date the license was canceled or expired, and the fact that you were in good standing.
  3. Certification of Completion of Prelicensing Training, unless your previous state has a prelicensing reciprocity agreement with Colorado or you have been licensed in your previous state for one year.

Colorado Insurance License Exam
Colorado insurance license applicants must pass a computerized license examination administered by Pearson VUE, a national testing firm. To schedule an exam date and time, you can call them toll-free at (800) 274-2616 or visit their website. You are encouraged to reserve your exam date at least three or four business days prior.

Take with you to the test center on examination day the following:

  1. Your confirmation number
  2. Proof of Completion of Prelicensing training
  3. Two forms of current, government-issued signature identification, one of which must be photo-bearing and one must include your SSN.
  4. Failing score report (if retaking an exam)
  5. Proof of legal residency in the United States.
