What are the education requirements to become an Insurance Producer?
The Minimum Training Requirements for Insurance Producer Licensure are:

Course Hours
Principles of Insurance 3
Legal Concepts and Regulations 4
Ethics 3
Property Insurance 20
Casualty Insurance 20
Life Insurance 40
Health Insurance 40

You only need to complete the required hours for Principles of Insurance, Legal Concepts and Regulations, and Ethics once if applying for more than one line of authority.

Are their any circumstances that allow for a waiver of the prelicensing education?
Prelicensing education is not required if you meet one of the following criteria:

  1. You are applying to reinstate a cancelled or expired license in Colorado that been inactive for one year or less.
  2. You are applying for a resident license in Colorado, were previously licensed in another state and have satisfied prelicense education required by the former state pertinent to the line or lines of authority you are applying for in Colorado.
  3. You are applying for a non-resident license in Colorado pertinent to the line or lines of authority held in your home state.

How long is the prelicensing training courses valid for?
Prelicensing training courses are valid for one year. If you allow your license to lapse for more than one year you must complete a new prelicensing education course.

Can I complete the program at home?
Yes. Regulations allow you to complete the mandated hours of education at home. You will log in and log out of each session, and the computer will keep track of your total hours accumulated.

How do I know in which lines of insurance I need to be licensed?
The manager who has expressed interest in hiring you as an insurance agent knows which lines of insurance you’ll be selling. Contact him/her to find out which coursework you’ll need.

How do I apply for an insurance license?
Submit an electronic application. The licensing application can be accessed at www.sircon.com/colorado. You will be notified by mail of any outstanding requirements.
