California Insurance License Renewal & Continuing Education Courses

 

California Insurance License Term

California insurance licenses must be renewed every two years. Licenses are issued for two-year terms. Specifically, the term of the first license begins the date the license was issued and ends the last day of the calendar month two years later.

Personal Lines Broker-Agent licenses are issued for a two-year fixed term that begins on January 1 of the first year and ends on December 31 of the second year.

Fire and Casualty Broker-Agent License Renewal Requirements

Hours required for new licenses issued after 1/1/92:

  • Complete a minimum of 25 approved credit hours for that license type for each of the first four 12-month periods, starting from the issuance date of the original license. Licensees must also complete four hours of ethics continuing education every license term as a part of the requirements.
  • After the first four 12-month periods, complete 30 approved credit hours for that license type during each two-year licensing period, including four hours of ethics continuing education.

Hours required for licenses issued before 1/1/92:

  • Complete 30 approved credit hours for that license type during each two-year licensing period, including four hours of ethics continuing education.

Life Only and/or Accident Health Agent License Renewal Requirements
Complete a minimum of 24 approved credit hours for that license type each two-year license term, including four hours of ethics continuing education.

Fire and Casualty Broker-Agent and Life Agent (dual license holders) License Renewal Requirements
The CE requirement goes to the individual, not to each license held. The CE requirement can be met by taking courses approved for either license type.

Personal Lines Broker Agent License Renewal Requirements
Complete a minimum of 10 approved credit hours for that license type (any Fire and Casualty CE course will satisfy this requirement) each calendar year of the two-year license terms, including two hours of ethics continuing education.

Limited Lines Automobile Insurance Agent License Renewal Requirements
Complete a minimum of 20 approved credit hours for that license type each two-year license term, including two hours of ethics continuing education.

New Life Agent License Requirements

Effective January 1, 2008, all Life Agent licenses will automatically convert to a new Life-Only and Accident and Health licenses. The following details Life-Only and Accident and Health licenses continuing education requirements after January 1, 2008:

License Status CE Requirements
Life-Only Agent and/or Accident and Health Agent 24 hours every two years
Life-Only Agent and Fire and Casualty Broker-Agent (licensed less than 4 years) 25 hours per year
Life-Only Agent and Fire and Casualty Broker-Agent (licensed more than 4 years) 30 hours every two years

Long Term Care Requirements
If the licensee solicits individuals for the sale of long-term care (LTC) insurance, 8 hours of the continuing education requirement must be in specially designated LTC courses.

Non-resident License Renewal Requirements
If home state has CE requirements, existing licenses will be renewed and new licenses will be issued if the home state's requirements are met.
If home state does not have CE requirements, current licensees must meet the CE requirements listed above. New licenses will be issued if applicant has a current license in good standing in the home state.
