Sharing Secrets

You’ve already taken the NMLS test more than once. Three times? No kidding! Your roommate tells you he heard you trying to answer quiz questions in your sleep. You're on your third, tattered copy of our Federal Regulations Study Aid and have a standing reservation at the testing center. So you ask, what's it take to pass the dang NMLS exam? What's the secret?

The secret is: Hard Work. The fact is you have to learn the material like you're going to teach it! Those other MLOs who’ve already passed? Chances are they followed the study tips I’m going to share over the next couple of blogs. These tips assume you've completed the course and now you're studying for the Real Thing. Let's get started!

Study Tip #1:
DO NOT USE THE QUIZZES AND PRACTICE EXAMS TO STUDY FOR THE NMLS TESTS.
That's right. Do NOT. ProSchools has professionally-written, NMLS-approved courses which include lessons, assignments, quizzes, reviews and practice exams which are designed for your optimum learning. For the concentrated study needed before taking the NMLS test, however, you'll want our lessons in front of you. If you only review the quizzes and practice exams, you're simply memorizing questions and answers that may never appear on your NMLS test. That's a waste of your valuable time!

Study Tip #2:
GO THROUGH THE MATERIAL ONE LESSON AT A TIME.
First,  print out the lesson material. Then, print out the
NMLS Test Content Outline so you're clear about what the test is going to cover. Read through the lesson quickly and make notes in the margins or use stickies to tag the material on which you want to concentrate. Go back through a second time, more slowly.  Read those things you want to remember OUT LOUD. These include words and terms in bold, a.c.r.o.n.y.m.s, and anything you've tagged. If taking notes or making outlines works for you, this is where you do it. And slow down! When we're studying terminology we're familiar with, we tend to read quickly and miss important details. In the long run that's actually a waste of your time, too.

This stuff really works. Check back next week for more NMLS Test Study Tips from ProSchools.
