What is Happening In Massachusetts?

ProSchools just received approval from the Massachusetts Division of Banks to offer three mortgage originator continuing education courses.  These three online courses cover the topics outlined in the SAFE Act. Currently, loan originators in Massachusetts need to renew their license by November 1 each year and they must complete 8 hours of continuing education.

Looking down the road, the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) will approve courses that meet the education requirements of SAFE. For continuing education, Massachusetts loan originators will still need to complete a minimum of 8 hours, but under SAFE,  the 8 hours must cover 3 hours of federal law and regulations, 3 hours of ethics (including fraud, consumer protection, and fair lending issues), and 2 hours of training related to lending standards for nontraditional mortgage products.

The SAFE Act will also require 20 hours of prelicense education. ProSchools is hoping to offer the prelicense training in Massachusetts, but under current DOB requirements, their residential mortgage lending course must be entirely classroom-based instruction.  Massachusetts actually requires 24 hours, more than the minimum hours required by SAFE. We will keep watching for a change and hopefully they will accept online training for prelicense in the future.
