New Criminal Records Background Check Fee in Oregon

The State of Oregon Insurance Division has announced that effective September 1, 2009 there is a new fee that will be required to be paid when submitting your initial individual insurance license application form.

In addition to the fees that have been historically required ($30 application fee + a $45 license fee), there is an additional fee of $47.25 that will pay for the federal and state criminal background check that is required to be performed before a license can be issued.  This fee must be included when you pay for the “other” required fees.  Read on for more!

To quote Jim Thompson, Oregon’s Insurance Division Manager of Licensing:

As of September 1, 2009, the Oregon Insurance Division is required to conduct criminal background checks of all applicants for an initial resident license.

In addition to submitting the application for a license and the existing $75 license and application fees, all applicants for a resident license must submit:
  1. a completed Criminal Records Request form
  2. a fingerprint card
  3. $47.25 to cover the cost of a background check of state and federal criminal records
Any applicant who has submitted an application on or after September 1, 2009 is required to complete the Criminal Records Request form and submit it with a check or money order for $47.25.  Applications received on or after September 1 will not be processed until this form and fee are both received.  The division will contact all applicants who have submitted an application within this timeframe with instructions.

The rules outlining what convictions are relevant to obtaining a producer license are OAR 836-072-0001 – OAR 836-072-0045. You can find them at:  http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/rules/OARS_800/OAR_836/836_072.html

Please allow 7-10 days for background check processing in addition to the time for application processing.

This information was somewhat delayed in getting to us, so we at ProSchools apologize for any confusion that might have occurred.  Please contact the Insurance Division at the number listed in Mr. Thompson’s quote for further information and clarification if necessary.  There is a possibility that a candidate’s ability to test will be impaired due to this rule change, so please remember that your tuition at ProSchools is valid for a period of 12 months and that you are more than welcome to re-attend any lecture classes that you have enrolled in and don’t forget the review session that is at no cost for all ProSchools enrollees.
